RFS Filmmakers' Camp - 2025 Spring, Los Angeles, California, USA

The week-long intensive RFS Filmmakers’ Camps have developed gradually from the several masterclasses taught by award-winning film directors invited by the Film Forum and from undergraduate study trips to Sundance and the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival. Students may participate by applying for UCHV Research Film Studio Travel Grants.

Filmmakers’ Camp 2025 LA – Workshop in the UCLA Film and Television Archive

10:30 AM – 12 PM: UCLA | MAP
Presentation/discussion led by Maya Montañez Smukler and Miki Bulos. Description: general information about researching archival collections—paper/photo and moving images. Focus on specific examples from the LA Rebellion collections; there will be time for students to look though paper and photo collection materials in the classroom.

1 PM – 3 PM: Filmmakers’ Workshop at UCLA. Distinctive Collections Classroom, Young Research Library, UCLA campus.

4 PM – 7 PM: Filmmakers’ Workshop on the Sand (Parry's Cafe | Map).

Sunset: Venice Beach (optional).

Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema
From the scientific and technological advancements that made color possible, to its emotional and psychological impact on viewers, to the ways filmmakers use color as a storytelling tool.

Lunch at Fanny’s Restaurant on site.

1 PM – 7 PM: Sightseeing.

7 PM – 10 PM: Griffith Observatory | Map – Southern California’s gateway to the cosmos!

Preparation for Observatory: Rebel Without a Cause (1955) & La La Land (2016) (optional).
